| posted 06-11-19 00:50 AM CT (US) Microsoft has unveiled the trailer for a 'definitive edition' remake of Age of Empires 2 at their 2019 E3 Briefing. You can view the trailer now! Trailer Link The trailer doesn't reveal much, but keen eyes will see loads of quality of life improvements, including complete redesigns of all unit and building graphics, full 32 bit colour, increased frames for smoother animations, destruction graphics for buildings, better water and terrain rendering, and even some sneak peaks at the four new civs and some unique units! Particularly now that the few modding skills I have acquired go out the window with the introduction of modern 3D graphics.Is it real 3D? Aoe1: DE still use sprites I think. Wouldn't they have to make huge changes to the game engine to use real 3D graphics? Personally I think the game is too bright, but I will definitely buy it. Still, even if older mods are somehow compartible, they will look very much out of place. | posted 06-11-19 07:20 AM CT (US) 6 / 18 The graphics are done the same way as the origin, 3D models rendered as 2D sprites. Apparently now though, there are more angles and more frames per angle, so modding in a new unit would be a huge effort. We will have to see though. |

But now that seemingly substantial updates and progress is happening, they earned enough credit now so that I will check it out at release. Maybe I will make a writeup on the new campaign, although I can already see it being cakewalk mode for all the people who didnt play AoK for 15+ years now. I dont really care about graphics but they didnt look bad in the trailer. 'Excellent could be any map that has the quality of a ES random map or ES scenario. AoK is an excellent, award winning game. Certainly not extreme by modern PC gaming standards, but a lot more restrictive that the HD remake or the CD version are. Part of AoE2's charm has been that everyone pretty much can run it, so I imagine a decent portion of the fanbase will be a bit inconvenienced by this. |
